For a while now Rams fans have missed having a natural finisher in the side. This summer Derby looked north to sign Johnny Russell from Dundee United for a fee believed to be around £700,000.
Dundee fans clearly rate him very highly and his goal record in Scotland suggests he could well be the man to answer the Rams’ problems in the striking department. However, as I pointed out prior to him making the move to the East Midlands, Scotland is a completely different standard to England’s Championship.
Russell has made a good start to his Derby career in pre-season friendlies but, of course, the real question is whether he can perform on the big stage.
He seems like he’s a lively striker, with pace to burn, an eye for goal and a knack for getting in the right positions at the right times. The 23-year-old has the ability to score a real variety of goals. The Scotsman is at 22/1 to be the Championship’s top scorer with Sky Bet (as of today – 31/7/13) .
I genuinely now think he has the potential to hit a lot of goals, particularly with the creativity of the midfield and Chris Martin and Conor Sammon proving to be good at feeding their strike partner.
Last season I lost count of the amount of easy chances missed from good build-up play, which was terribly disappoint because, in such a competitive league, not taking your chances can prove extremely costly – the Crystal Palace home match for example, everything was there apart from the finishing.

After initially being sceptical, because Chris Maguire was once tipped to do well in this league and look how he’s turned out, I do think Russell is a player to be excited about. But let’s not expect wonders in the first few games, give him time to adapt and settle in.
